Why is our research ugly? We focus on what we affectionately call ugly information: The specialized, detailed stuff people need to solve the tough problems.
Tracy Allison Altman developed Tiny Soapbox after seeing more than her fair share of ugly. She’s an author, researcher, technologist, and educator who is passionate about helping people
get better information, and get better use out of it.
-Tracy is a founding member of ExplanationScience.org, a membership organization dedicated to advancement of the science of explaining.
-On her blog, Evidence Soup, she explores practical ways to find and communicate evidence.
Tracy’s work focuses on condensing complex stuff into concise analysis, innovative online formats, and at-a-glance presentations that help people use information more effectively. She’s worked in publishing, software, and energy & environment: Bigger names like Reed-Elsevier, webMethods, and Apache plus some startups. She has led software development and integration efforts; designed information resources, portals, and other ways of presenting knowledge; developed training; plus authored numerous books, white papers, and articles.
Tracy’s doctoral thesis examined how interdisciplinary groups of people explain their ideas, insights, and evidence. The findings? Many explanations suffer when they are contributed without
a common framework: This often limits the usefulness, transparency, and strategic value of potentially persuasive explanations. That’s what inspired Tracy to create Tiny Soapbox.
Academic credentials: PhD, Public Policy Analysis (Univ of Colorado). Master's, Computer Science concentration (Colorado). BS, Chemical Engineering (Oklahoma State U). Mathematics teaching certificate (Colorado).
Tracy lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband and their standard poodle.
